SBA Alum Brooks in Top Five at Copper

Congratulations to SBA Alum Dylan Brooks for his top-five finish in the FIS Giant Slalom race at Copper Mountain yesterday. 

Brooks put together two runs of 1:00.45 and 1:01.44. The top combined time was 1:59.09.

Tahoe Adventure Orientation, Days 1 and 2

Here's a brief report from the field at Orientation 2012...

Our first stop was at Treetop Adventure Park at Granlibakken Resort. The park features a variety of ropes courses and zip lines, from green to black diamond. Noteworthy: a curious bear came to watch our Fighting Marmots on the ropes. Fortunately for our student athletes they are so fit that apparently they proved unappetizing to our furry friend.

Next stop: Sugar Pine State Park. Many thanks to Kirk Hardie and Will Richardson of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science for guiding our hike through the forest and the many lessons on the Tahoe Basin ecosystem. Thanks, too, to Ambrose for the campfire Mark Twain reading last night.

Today's highlight has without question been a paddle from Baldwin Beach to the majesty of Emerald Bay. Winds were calm for the morning paddle but kicked up in the afternoon, providing a nice tailwind out of Emerald Bay. Unfortunately, rounding the corner out of Emerald Bay that tailwind turned into a headwind, making for a challenging return paddle.

Tonight features goal setting and the formulation and articulation of our annual string of hopes around the campfire. Tomorrow we hike Ellis Peak. Go Fighting Marmots!

Fall Festival in Film

Halloween and the 2011 Fall Festival attracted campus visits from the likes of Batman and Robin (Riley Plant and Colter Fellows), Candice and Douglas Brooks (Lauren Dunn and Augie DeRyk), not one but two Fighting Marmots (see the movie), and Calvin and Hobbes (Matt Hourigan).


All great costumes, to be sure, but, for simplicity, the hands-down and highly coveted Top Minimalist Costume Prize goes - in the humble and unbiased judgement of Marmot Man - to Mr. Stephen (with a "ph") Ascher.


Well-deserved kudos go out to Student Council and especially to Dylan Murtha and Master of Ceremonies Chuck Klein for a successful Fall Festival!

Once upon dry land...

Well before the snow flies, SBA student-athletes can be seen steeling themselves for the winter race and comp season.

It's dry-land conditioning time, and Candice - forever at the right place at the right time - caught our student-athletes in full training mode with her Flip cam last week...
