Valentine's Day Serenades at SBA

SBA Student Council officers delivered customized Valentine's Day serenades to raise funds for this year's senior trip to Disneyland. The performers made quite a splash on campus, and not only for their singing, as can be seen here...

A Two-Podium Day for SBA

Fighting marmot alpine racers ably defended home snow with some strong skiing in this morning's giant slalom race, taking first place in the ladies' and third in the men's races here at Sugar Bowl.

On the ladies' side, it was Julia Bjorkman with another first place finish for the season. Michael Cooper was third on the men's side.

Also in the top ten for the ladies were Lauren Dunn (fourth) and Lily Longton (ninth). For the men, Owen Wattenmaker finished fourth and Pieter Weemaes seventh. Full results are available HERE for the ladies and HERE for the men.

Scott Schadlich named me volunteer "cat herder" at the starting gate, giving me a chance to see some of the pre-race and gate action close up. Enjoy the film footage (also available HERE), and congratulations to each and every fighting marmot for today's strong showing!

Argentine Makes SBA Campus Landfall

Argentine culture came alive in Spanish 5 this week.  Thank you to SBA Spanish teacher Aly Kendall for the following report of a rich cultural exchange that she initiated for the benefit of SBA student-athletes.
"Spanish 5 welcomed two guests late this week. Annika Deurlington, a freshman at Claremont McKenna College and graduate of Truckee High, spent the previous school year on a rotary scholarship in Argentina. A true ambassador for study abroad, she modeled lovely Spanish and encouraged our SBA students to take advantage of any similar opportunities that might come their way. Her friend, Martín Benavides, a native of Argentina who is visiting Annika during a break from his college studies, was eager to share with the class as well. It was wonderful to see Chris, Chuck and Conner welcome these guests and show genuine interest in their lives. Annika and Martín shared a little bit of their perspectives with us, allowed us to practice Spanish with a native speaker, and generally expanded our visions of the Spanish-speaking world. It was a special opportunity for us, and we were grateful for their visit.”

Where's the Beach?

Spirit Week 2012 got under way today with Beach Day. Below, Chuck Klein surfs the Net in his best beach bum attire.

Dodgeball with Daron Rahlves

Daron Rahlves stopped in at All School Meeting Friday to bring the trophy home for SBA Dodgeball teammates Devin Gill, Chuck Klein, Riley Plant, and Augie DeRyk. The team recently won a tournament to support High Fives Foundation (Click HERE to learn more about High Fives). Go Fighting Marmots!

Scene on Campus Pic of the Day

Trips program groups have begun meeting to organize and to allow for student-athlete input into these experiential learning opportunities. Click HERE to learn more about our Inaugural Trips Program.

Andy Knox and Andy Giordano will be co-leading a coastal scuba-diving trip. Below, Andy and Andy confer with their group.

Hands-on Learning, Human Geography Style

Human Geography students recently navigated Old Town Truckee using only Sanborn Fire Insurance maps from the 1890s. Teacher Andy Knox discovered the maps on microfiche at the Truckee Public Library.

"They tell you a lot about what your community once looked like," said Knox.

Hartley Siblings Top Balloting at Student Council Elections

A heartwarming photo greeted student-athletes as they filed into 102 today for Student Council elections.

Taken well before their Fighting Marmot days, the photo showed big brother Drew - Captain of SBA Team Freeride - draping an arm affectionately over the shoulder of little sister, Camille, an SBA Nordic ski racer.

"Vote Hartley," the campaign poster declared. No exclamation point needed: Camille's upraised thumb said it all.

The brother-sister duo was elected President (Drew) and Vice President (Camille) today at All School Meeting after delivering a campaign speech they had co-authored as a poem to the student body (stay tuned for the text of the speech to be published).

Congratulations also to Chuck Klein and Daisy Schadlich, who were elected Secretary and Treasurer, respectively, and to all of the candidates for having the courage to run for office and for the strength of their speeches.

"The speeches today from all of the candidates were the best I have heard during my time as Student Council Advisor," said Aly Kendall. "It's exciting to see our students show so much interest in leadership roles within our community, and I look forward to working with the newly elected leaders on campus as they plan community-building and charitable activities for our student body."

Student Council membership is open to all student-athletes and depends on their participation and creativity for its success.

"We are looking forward to lots of Marmot participation this year," said Aly. "All are welcome."

On Character

SBA seniors Chris Fitzpatrick, Katrin Larusson, and Chuck Klein addressed the student body at our opening Village Hall formal dinner Tuesday. One of the main thrusts of their address: character...

Hamlet Cast Takes Fencing Lessons from Coach Schloss

Head Nordic Coach Jeff Schloss took some time off from the skinny skis recently to show SBA student-athlete-actors some of his fencing moves.

Enjoy the short film (with music by Truckee violinist Liz Glattly) and Joanne Knox's preview of the spring play, and get your tickets now for the big event!

"In preparation for the spring drama performance of an adapted version of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, students have been busy analyzing characters’ motives, memorizing lines, learning Shakespearean language, and even received some fencing instruction from Nordic coach extraordinaire, Jeff Schloss. The enthusiasm and excitement around this production is palpable! Our Hamlet (junior Chuck Klein) is supported by: Riley Plant (Claudius), Camille Hartley (Gertrude), Cassidy Cichowicz (Ophelia), Augie DeRyk (Polonius), Joe Piercy (Laertes), Lauren Dunn (Horatio), Chris Fitzpatrick (Ghost of Hamlet's father), Colter Fellows (Marcellus), and Devin Gill and Matt Hourigan (Players and Gravediggers). The play is held together by the explanation of our enthusiastic storytellers Dylan Murtha, Grace Hutton, and Katrin Larusson. Please join us Friday, June 15th (the night before graduation) at Judah lodge for our performance. You can reserve tickets by contacting Joanne Knox (jknox@sbacademy.org); the cost is $5 per a ticket and this production will sell out, so get your requests in soon! Thanks in advance for supporting SBA drama!" - Joanne Knox

Gear!

Considering all the gear our student/athletes get to schlep around, it is no wonder they are so strong...

One on One

One of the hallmarks of a Sugar Bowl Academy education on display here: plenty of opportunity to work with faculty one on one.

Hartley and High Fives = Neck Gators

Today the High Fives Nonprofit Foundation's sporty neck gators were all the rage. Here are a couple of looks that students tried on for size...
