Ascher Preps Campus for Annular Eclipse

Steve Ascher - glider pilot, meteorologist, always-on-Google-Earth guy - forever has his sights set on the sky. At Friday's All School Meeting, Ascher educated SBA student-athletes about Sunday's annular eclipse and how to view it without being blinded. Folks in the Donner Summit and greater Truckee area are uniquely positioned for a perfect vantage point for the eclipse, which will happen at approximately 6:30 p.m. Sunday evening. Enjoy the short film of students trying out their "Eclipse Shades," which were handed out at All School Meeting as part of Steve's presentation.

I Scream, You Scream...

This is the kind of experiential learning that motivates: make your own ice cream, then eat it!  

On our first snow day of the 2011-2012 school year, Physical Science students did just that. 

The following report comes from Physical Science teacher Izaak Eberst: 

In physical science, we've been talking about states of matter and phase changes. To see it in action, our class created a liquid cream mixture, then cooled it off into ice cream. To achieve this phase change without a freezer [even the snow outside was not quite cold enough], we surrounded the cream with ice and salt. Ice is cold, and the salt keeps the ice colder, even though it turns it into a liquid. This is also the reason we put salt on the roads, as it keeps the water from freezing, even as temperatures drop below 0C. Eventually, the liquid cream solidified into the tasty treat we all know and love, and it tasted almost as good in the snow as it does on a summer afternoon!

U.S. Olympic speed skier Daron Rahlves brought his star power to the Sugar Bowl Academy Performance Training Center Wednesday afternoon.

“This is like being home more and more,” said Rahlves, who led the student/athletes from the academy’s Alpine and Freestyle skiing disciplines through a grueling “plyometric” workout.

“I have four year-old twins, and they’re in the Sugar Bowl program this season.

“The Sugar Bowl Academy, it’s something that, if I had this when I was growing up, this is where I would be. 

“I’m hoping to add a few things with my experiences through…training, racing in the World Cup and having some success there and passing it on.

“There are a lot of hard workers here, and if I can give a little help to make it run a little easier, that’s what it’s all about.”

Rahlves spun a few tales from the professional skiing circuit for the SBA student/athletes, and also gave MVP awards to the hardest working male and female.

Female MVP went to SBA freshman Lauren Dunn, while male MVP went to SBA 2011 graduate Scott Cooper.
